Uber Eats has partnered with over 100 restaurants in Nairobi, from which orders can be made on the app for delivery by hundreds of couriers who have signed up. Payment for food is by card, cash or mobile money.

The service that is initially available in Kileleshwa, Westlands, Kilimani and Lavington, is expected to be rolled out to the rest of the city, as well as other cities in Kenya and the region in the future. Nairobi becomes the fourth city in sub-Saharan Africa in which Uber Eats is available after Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

Speaking during the launch, Uber Eats Kenya General Manager, Amal Devani said that Uber’s new service is expected to revolutionise food delivery in Nairobi by making it easier and more convenient, the same way it innovatively transformed movement in the city by making it safe, reliable and affordable.

“We are excited to introduce this revolutionary app to Nairobi, after its huge global success in over 200 cities around the world. It has been custom-built to suit local needs, including the option of paying by M-PESA and cash. At the touch of a button, Nairobi residents are now conveniently and easily connected to their favorite restaurants,” Mr Devani added.

The Uber Eats app, which is separate from the Uber rides app, is available for download from either the App Store or Google Play. Orders can be made from the app between 10am and 10pm on any day of the week. There is no minimum baskets size; and each order attracts a delivery fee of Kshs 150. On Uber Eats, eaters can enjoy personalised recommendations, filter for the right food, track their order in real time and schedule orders in order to plan ahead.

Mr. Devani said, “Through Uber Eats, we would like to make eating well effortless for residents of Nairobi everyday by providing a wide and affordable selection. In this way, we are also supporting growth of local restaurants using technology to build their business by opening their doors to more virtual customers, as well as access to actionable data and analytics that can make their business more profitable and efficient. For our delivery partners, we are creating new flexible economic opportunities by providing work at the push of a button”.

Uber first launched Uber Eats two years ago, during which the app has grown to become a global leader in food delivery, the app is present in 200 cities across the world and has partnered with over 8,000 restaurants globally. Uber Eats becomes the second app launched by Uber, after the the Uber rides app that was first introduced in Nairobi in 2015 and has since expanded to Mombasa and Thika, with more than 363,000 active riders and over 5,000 active driver-partners.
