Search for 2018 Africa Food Prize Winner Enters Home Stretch

    The Africa Food Prize is the preeminent award recognizing an outstanding individual or institution that is leading the effort to change the reality of farming in Africa—from a struggle to survive to a business that thrives.

    The US $100,000 prize celebrates Africans who are taking control of Africa’s agriculture agenda. It puts a spotlight on bold initiatives and technical innovations that can be replicated across the continent to create a new era of food security and economic opportunity for all Africans.

    This year’s search for the winner of the 2018 Africa Food Prize, is already underway.

    With the closing date for nominations for the US $100,000 prize set for 15th May, 2018, entrants have been urged to take advantage of the remaining period to make their submissions.

    Now in its third year, the Prize has continued to grow in stature and popularity. In 2017, a total of 643 outstanding individuals, projects and institutions were put forward for consideration for the prestigious Prize. Nominations came from over 20 African countries in Africa as well as from countries outside the continent.

    The 2018 winner will be chosen by the Africa Food Prize Committee, an independent body of preeminent leaders that is chaired by the former Nigerian President, H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo.

    The 2017 Prize was jointly awarded to Hon. Prof. Ruth Oniang’o, a professor and advocate of nutrition from Kenya, and Mme Maïmouna Sidibe Coulibaly, an entrepreneur and agro industrialist from Mali, for their exemplary efforts in driving Africa’s agriculture transformation.

    Objectives

    • The Africa Food Prize recognizes extraordinary women, men, and institutions whose outstanding contributions to African agriculture are forging a new era of sustainable food security and economic opportunity that elevates all Africans.
    • Building on the values and principles established by the Yara Prize, theAfrica Food Prize puts a bright spotlight on achievements and innovations with transformative power that can be scaled and replicated across the continent to eliminate hunger and poverty and provide a vital new source of employment and income.

    Selection Criteria:

    The winner will be selected by the Prize Committee chaired by H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, Former President of Nigeria and unveiled at a high-profile gala dinner at the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) 2018 this September in Kigali, Rwanda.
