Safaricom PLC released their 11th 2022 Sustainable Business report under the theme Partnering for growth: Transforming lives which brings out the work done between Safaricom and many other organizations and partners to transform lives

From innovation to affordable education services to telemedicine, Safaricom has been creating strategic partnerships that deliver to their customers.

One of the highlights from the launch was when CEO Peter Ndegwa mobilised his Kenyan counterparts to join the Africa Business Leaders Coalition (ABLC) whose aim is to bring together CEOs from across the continent to help drive action on pressing sustainability issues and promote UN Global Compact principles in their supply chains and broader ecosystem.

The Telco is committed to managing their impact on the environment and developing solutions to help our customers mitigate their environmental footprint. This means achieving net zero by 2050, building a circular economy and helping society to decarbonise.

These are their estimated targets:

Net Zero by 2050

• Achieve 20% reduction on emissions from the network

• Purchase or generate 50% of energy needs from renewable sources by installing solar PV and battery storage for 5 000 sites

• Grow 5M trees as part of our carbon offset programme

• 50% reduction of emissions from supply and value chains

• Helping Society to Decarbonise through digital technologies and services

Recycle/repurpose 100% of solid waste

• 20% growth in E-Waste collected

• Recycle, Reuse or Resale of 100% our network waste

• Zero single use plastics from our operations

So far they have:

  • Transitioned to the use of clean energy at their sites and leveraged technology to provide clean energy, including payment solutions.

• Planted 372 000 trees as part of their carbon offset programme with the aim and commitment to grow 5 million trees by 2025 which is estimated to offset 26% of thei emissions.

• They have transitioned 310 (cumulative total) of their sites to renewable and hybrid energy sources against a target of 4,200 sites by 2025.

• Partnered with M-Kopa Solar for a pay-as-you-go model for device acquisition, achieving total sales on Kshs 427 000 – growth of 145% year on year. The partnership provided access to solar energy to over one million rural households with an impact on 3.7 million lives and over two million tonnes (tCO2) in avoided emissions.

• Partnered with M-Gas to provide low income households in Nairobi with access to clean, reliable and affordable cooking gas. 10 depots serving 185,000 customers as at end of FY22.
