Before You Start Farming - 3 Important Factors To Consider

Kenyans tend to have this craze where when they see someone doing well in a certain trade, they jump into it hoping to make the same amount of profits. Many people end up injecting their money and getting looses. That’s the same craze in farming and agribusiness where people who are new to the trade tend to get into this trap.

One of the secrets to reap from this sector is to understand the farming seasons. If a farmer is planting potatoes in Mau Narok and reaped profits it doesn’t mean that you will get the same.

Here are a few things to consider as you start your farming venture

  • Do your research – Identify the crops you want to plant and do research on the seeds, soil type etc
  • The climate of the location of your farm – There are a lot of adverts on land for farming, however, it is important to consider the type of climate needed for the crops of your choice before purchasing or buying land for farming. Some crops do well in humid areas, some require a high amount of rainfall others minimal, hence it’s wise to consider the type of crop and it’s climatical requirements before starting.

  • Market – This is critical. A lot of farmers begin the process without a single source of a market ( we will explore this in depth). Before you plant that first seed, take the time (lots and lots of time) to figure out where you’re going to sell your products, who is going to buy them, and how you’re going to do it. Once you’ve done this, create a backup plan. Then, come up with another backup plan. Chances are you’re going to need them. Farmers are always advised to have at least two sources of markets before planting, lest you have heaps of sacks of produce without a market
