Safaricom Unveils Bonga For Good Initiative In Response To COVID-19 Pandemic

As the world continues to grapple with the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenya has already started experiencing the terrible dilemma that the raging disease brings.

With the Kenyan government putting up measures to contain and deal with the pandemic, the larger part of the Kenyan population, especially those living in Nairobi already fear for the future. Both online and on the ground, the situation is the same; people cannot afford to continue living with the uncertainty of not knowing where their next meal will come from and the existing curfew measures are already putting a strain in different ways. With all types of businesses getting affected, public transportation fares hiked and working hours reduced to see citizens getting home in time of the curfew, those providing essential services like shop owners, mama mbogas, boda boda riders and casual labourers are struggling now more than ever to afford a meal at the end of the day.

Safaricom Unveils Bonga For Good Initiative In Response To COVID-19 PandemicTo help the plight of the common mwananchi during this time, Safaricom has rolled out Bonga For Good, an initiative that will see customers use Bonga Points to pay for essential goods and services. The campaign will also empower customers to donate their Bonga Points to those in need as a show of goodwill during this period.

For the next 30 days, customers can redeem 1 Bonga Point for Kshs 30 cents, a 50% increase from the previous Kshs 20 cents per point, at over 140,000 Lipa na M-PESA merchants countrywide. Merchants accepting Lipa Na Bonga will receive a cash equivalent of the points redeemed, making it a normal business transaction.

  • Select Transfer Bonga points
  • Enter phone number to transfer to
  • Enter Bonga points
  • Enter Bonga PIN
  • Confirm details and send

To redeem or transfer points, customers will dial *126#. Customers can redeem as little as KES 1 via Lipa na Bonga at key merchants including Naivas Supermarket, Tuskys and Eastmatt.
