Some of the major changes in the proposed new budget sadly include the prices of kerosene, mitumbas and M-PESA mobile transfers which are set to shoot up after the government proposed new taxes to fund the Big Four agenda.

Treasury CS Henry Rotich announced increased taxes on several key consumer goods and services that will further burden the taxpayer including a 12 per cent excise duty on the service, leading mobile money provider Safaricom to increase the charges on M-PESA transactions by 10 per cent.

Changes in M-PESA transactions

Safaricom has limited the number of free transactions of below Kshs 100 to three per day. Thereafter, M-PESA users will pay 1 for amounts between Kshs 1 and Kshs 49 and Kshs 2 for amounts between Kshs 50 and Kshs 100 for transactions above the stated 3 per day.

The maximum daily transaction value is Kshs 140,000 while the maximum amount per transaction is Kshs 70,000.

In the image above,  Safaricom further said that customers will not be able to withdraw less than Kshs 50 from agents.

“You cannot deposit money directly into another M-Pesa customer’s account at an agent outlet,” it added. One of the things that hasn’t changed includes the fact that you can’t transact without your original I.D.
