As the world prepares to celebrate International Jazz Day on the 30th of April, Kenyan Trumpeter Christine Kamau keeps making moves and taking names. A keen collaborator and campaigner for music as a tool for propagating unity, Ms. Kamau has been invited to perform at the Lagos International Jazz Festival 2019.

Kenyan Jazz Musician Christine Kamau, To Perform In NigeriaHailed as Nigeria’s Premier Jazz Festival, the event will be held on 29th to 30th April and will feature over 30 acts from Nigeria and beyond in celebration of International Jazz Day.

Christine Kamau is a Kenyan Trumpeter, Composer, Band Leader and Performing Artist. Her music is a fusion of African styles of Benga, Rumba Chakacha with jazz influences and improvisation.

In 2012, Christine Kamau released an 8-track instrumental afro-jazz album titled ‘This is for You’. The album offers an exciting listening experience, the music being a fusion of Jazz with the African music elements of ‘Benga’ and Rhumba’. This debut release received positive reviews from the music community and saw her featured on the BBC music program titled ‘Africa Beats’ a series that showcased emerging music talent from Africa.

She has graced various stages in Africa; Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zanzibar including a notable headline performance at the Kigali Jazz Junction (Rwanda) in 2017. This will be her second performance in Nigeria, having performed at the Capital Jazz Festival, Abuja in 2016.

Having graced various stages on the continent, Christine Kamau is steadily becoming an established name on the African Jazz Scene.

Started in 2008 by Nigerian promoter Mr. Ayoola Shadare, Lagos International Jazz Festival has featured many musicians including ASA, Courtney Pine, Freshly Ground and Jermaine Jackson. The festival also features lectures and workshops. Christine Kamau will be the first Kenyan Jazz musician to perform at the 11th edition of the festival.
